Program Information

The Eye on the Reef Program is based on a partnership between the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the Great Barrier Reef tourism industry and the reef research community. The Eye on the Reef Program’s main aim is to increase communication and information exchange between all three partners, achieving a number of specific objectives.

Specific objectives of the Eye on the Reef Program:

  • To collect and record information on reef health indicators, protected and iconic species and emerging issues as observed by tourism industry staff, and to link this information to the scientific research community and management.
  • To build and maintain a cost effective and powerful early warning tool for detecting and documenting changes to the GBR marine environment that are significant to reef health and processes at key tourism sites.
  • Provide a mechanism to deliver science to the tourism community; increase the knowledge and understanding of tourism operators, deck staff and therefore reef visitors about the sites they visit and the reef in general.
  • To provide for the exchange of knowledge between all levels of the tourism industry, ranging from “deck staff” to management and industry groups and the research and management communities.
  • To build understanding and capacity within the tourism industry to assist with research and management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
  • Improve linkages to and complement existing and future data sets including the Australian Institute of Marine Science Long Term Monitoring Program (LTMP) and Temperature Monitoring Program.
